A Note from JulieHairspray came out of my Crazy For You win. I had won so many awards for Crazy For You that the pressure was on to produce something equally as good. It was really scary.
I had collaborated with Sarah Rodgers before, so I knew how she worked. She's very focused on style, text, and actors, so I really had to make these actors look like great dancers, even where that was a weaker part of their skill set. It was a big challenge, but we worked hard.
Hairspray is such a great show. There are so many big production numbers, great songs, and storytelling transitions. It's a big show and an important story.
