On the Town
Associate Direction and Choreography by JULIE TOMAINO
Direction and Choreography by BRETT SMOCK
The Rev Theatre, Auburn, NY
A Note from JulieOn the Town is where I learned how to take a classic musical and give it a present day treatment without changing the era. We made it not just relevant but interesting for today's audience. The way Brett, the Director/Choreographer, integrated projection, the set, the storytelling, the choreography, and the lighting was so rich.
On the Town has some script problems: some holes and some scenes that are way too long; It's not the easiest musical to work on, but I learned a lot about updating a production without changing the script.
