 A Note from Julie

I choreographed this show four months after my stroke. Thom and I had met a month before I had the stroke. My agent called him and said, "Julie can't do the job," and he said, "I'll wait until Julie tells me that." She said, "She can't talk right now," and he said, "Well, I'll wait." He held out because he had gone through medical things in his past, and he knew it probably wasn't what I wanted.

About two months before the project started, I called him and said I could do it, provided I could take a nap every lunch and have an Assistant Choreographer. He made everything completely accessible for me, and it was awesome. Not only was it a show that gave me my career back, it was such a wild, quirky show.

It's a very kooky script, and we didn't follow any of the rules. We didn't do anything the original production did. I approached it like a new musical and asked what the best storytelling would be. I didn't really know the story before, so every script page was new information for me. Because of that, I feel like we made our production really clear. We made it make sense, the style was cool, and we had great dancers and good people. It was very, very memorable.
