Anne of Green Gables

Movement Direction by JULIE TOMAINO
Adaptation & Direction by KAT SANDLER
The Stratford Festival

 A Note from Julie

The Director/Writer, Kat Sandler, is going to be huge. She wrote Yaga, which just premiered on Crave. Getting to work with such a prolific writer and director was really cool and interesting. She has so much energy and vigor for her work.

She respects everybody in the room. There were a lot of people in the room throwing out ideas, but I knew what my lane and my piece of the pie was. She'd talk us through what she wanted, and then we’d get up and work. It was a very imaginative production: the horse with the carriage, the carriage moving through water and blossoms, and a moment where Matthew dies.

It was really interesting movement for me to do because none of it was choreography. Most of it wasn't "five, six, seven, eight" or set to music at all. Like Sense and Sensibility, it was a new and different way of working. Some of the performers were dancers, but they also wanted to approach it from the text and the story first. I usually do that for choreography as well, but I can also say "five, six, seven, eight, do this step," and then we can talk about it. With this work, we talked about it first.

It was very fun, and the production is back at Stratford for the 2027 season and then traveling to Edmonton and Toronto.
